From Dann

I have a thing for fragrances. Actually, let me correct that. I have a thing for anything that smells ridiculously good. And I've always found it fascinating how a scent can bring back a memory, remind you of someone, or make you feel a certain way before you've even had time to think about it.

There's also something about finding your fragrance. You know, the one that makes you feel like yourself, the one people start associating with you, or the one you reach for when you want to feel a little different. And sometimes, the best ones aren't necessarily the most expensive.

So, while looking through fragrances from Coach, Lacoste, and Davidoff, I figured, why not put together a little edit? Three brands, different personalities, and plenty of reasons to explore beyond whatever bottle you've been wearing for years.

And because this is Half or Nothing, you already know the rule. If I find it at 50% off or more, it earns a spot. Because smelling amazing shouldn't mean paying full price.

Three Brands. Three Personalities. One Signature Scent.

CoachModern elegance
LacosteFresh confidence
DavidoffTimeless freshness

Each of these houses smells like a different mood. Davidoff is timeless freshness: cool water, mint and clean musk. Coach is modern elegance: soft florals and warm woods with a little polish. Lacoste is fresh confidence: citrus, light spice and easy, everyday wear.

You do not have to pick a winner. Pick the one that sounds like you on a good day, then use the guide below to find your bottle.

How to Read a Fragrance Pyramid

Every fragrance below comes with three layers of notes.

  1. Top notes

are what you smell in the first few minutes, usually citrus, fruit or herbs.

  2. Heart notes

arrive as the top fades and set the character, often florals, spices or woods.

  3. Base notes

are what is left on your skin hours later, such as musk, amber, vetiver or sandalwood.

When two sellers list slightly different notes for the same bottle, we point to the source so you can see where each list comes from.

Scent families help too. Aquatic and fresh scents smell like cool water, mint and clean air. Citrus and aromatic scents lean on lemon, grapefruit and herbs like lavender or rosemary. Floral scents center on jasmine, gardenia, rose or lily. Woody and musky scents finish warm, with cedar, vetiver, suede or sandalwood. Most perfumes mix two or three of these, which is why the guide above sorts by mood instead of by family.

Davidoff

Timeless Freshness

Davidoff traces back to a tobacco shop in Geneva, per Wikipedia. Cool Water came out in 1988 and is produced under license by Coty, and the original men's fragrance was created by perfumer Pierre Bourdon, according to Wikipedia's entry on the perfume. It is the kind of scent people recognize from across a room, which is exactly why it makes a good first pick. Here are the three we found at half off or more: the original for him, the original for her, and a deeper eau de parfum take on the men's version. Before You Buy: A Few Things Worth Knowing

Eau de toilette and eau de parfum are different.

An eau de parfum usually has a higher concentration of fragrance oils than an eau de toilette, which is why it often feels deeper. Both are real, full fragrances, so the right one is the one you like wearing.

Test it on your skin.

The same perfume can smell a little different from one person to the next. If you can, try a sample or a counter tester of the same scent first.

Store it well.

Keep bottles away from heat and direct sunlight, in a cool, dry place.

Prices move.

Do You Wear a Fragrance to Be Remembered, or to Remember Someone?

Because sometimes, a perfume is a lot more than just a perfume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fragrance is best for everyday wear?

It depends on the feel you want. For clean and easy, Davidoff Cool Water and Lacoste L.12.12 Blanc are the lighter picks. For something a little warmer, Coach Signature and Coach Floral lean elegant.

What is the difference between EDT and EDP?

Eau de toilette (EDT) and eau de parfum (EDP) are both finished fragrances. An EDP typically contains more fragrance oil than an EDT, so it often smells richer. The labels are a guide to concentration, not to quality.

How can I make my perfume last longer?

Spray it on moisturized skin, at pulse points such as the wrists and the sides of the neck, and avoid rubbing your wrists together afterward. How long a scent lasts still depends on the formula and on your skin.

Which of these would make a good gift?

Cool Water is the easiest, because the scent is so widely recognized. For a floral lover, Coach Signature, Coach Floral and Lacoste Touch of Pink are all approachable. If you are unsure, pick the fresher scent over the warmer one.

Should I choose EDT or EDP if I am buying online?

If you already know you like a scent, either works. If you are trying something new, an eau de toilette is usually lighter and more forgiving, while an eau de parfum is usually richer. Check the size too, since the same fragrance can come in several.

Are any of these listed as testers?

No. None of the nine fragrances in this edit is listed as a tester.
