The fastest way to find out is the bare-face test. Wash with a gentle cleanser, wait about 30 minutes, and touch nothing. Tight or flaky means dry. Shiny across the forehead, nose, and chin means oily. Shiny in the middle with normal or tight cheeks is combination. Once you know which way your skin leans, the routine and the products get simple.

Dermatologists generally sort skin into five types: normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive. The American Academy of Dermatology and Cleveland Clinic both use two simple checks to place you.
The bare-face test. Wash with a mild cleanser, apply nothing else, and wait 30 minutes. Tightness when you make a facial expression points to dry skin. An all-over shine points to oily skin.
The blotting sheet test. Press a clean blotting sheet against different areas of your face and hold it to the light. Loaded with oil means oily. Nearly clean plus any tightness or flaking means dry. Oil from the nose and forehead only, clear from the cheeks, means combination.
Day to day, oily skin looks shiny within a few hours of washing and breaks out more, dry skin feels tight and flakes, and combination does both by zone. Two types are less about oil: normal skin stays balanced, and sensitive skin reacts easily and can sit on top of any other type. There is a short section on both further down.
Skin type also shifts with the seasons and hormones, so re-check once or twice a year. If you are still not sure, a board-certified dermatologist can tell you.
Yes, and it is common. In an international survey of 14,317 women across nine countries published in Acta Dermato-Venereologica in 2024, 39.1% described their skin as combination, more than any single other type. In the same survey, 46.1% said their skin was sensitive.
Combination skin means the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) runs oily while the cheeks run normal to dry, sometimes flaky. The same study found that about 45% of women with dry skin and 40% with oily skin said their skin left them lacking confidence, which is why a routine that fits your skin is worth getting right.
The approach is to treat the two zones with different weights of product. Use a gentle cleanser on the whole face, put lighter oil-free products where you are shiny and richer creams where you are tight, exfoliate once or twice a week, and spot-treat the T-zone if it breaks out.
The goal is to clear excess oil without stripping the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that a cleanser that is too harsh irritates the skin and can trigger more oil. A 2025 Delphi consensus of cosmetic dermatologists in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology put salicylic acid and retinoids at the top for oily skin.
Cleanse twice a day and after sweating. Use a gentle foaming or gel cleanser, and do not scrub. A formula with salicylic acid works inside the pore on the plugs that cause congestion. At night, a micellar water made for oily skin lifts off makeup and sunscreen first.
Gel cleanser with 1% salicylic acid.

Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Face Cleanser
$9.99$24.5959% off

A soft foaming wash for a plainer daily option.
Mattifying micellar water and makeup remover.
Treat with a pore or oil-control serum in the morning. Niacinamide has the most support here. In a controlled study, 2% niacinamide measurably reduced how much oil the skin produced after about four weeks.
A lightweight serum for the look of pores. The 50% off shown above needs checkout code 5TXLOQ79.
Use a retinol at night, two or three times a week to start. Retinol helps with texture, clogged pores, and the overall look of oily skin. Use it on the nights you are not exfoliating, and build up slowly.

CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum
$7.00$14.6452% off
Half or Nothing may earn commissions on qualifying purchases.
A low-strength retinol serum with ceramides, in a small size to try first.
Add a leave-on BHA exfoliant two or three times a week. On the nights you are not using retinol. This is the step that keeps blackheads and rough texture down.
Paula's Choice SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant No deal yet. We have not found this one at 50% off, so this link goes straight to the product at full price. A leave-on 2% salicylic acid liquid, the most recommended BHA for congested skin.
Moisturize with a light, oil-free gel. Skipping moisturizer is a common mistake with oily skin. The American Academy of Dermatology says it is still important to keep the skin hydrated, just with the right texture. Its guide to picking a moisturizer points oily skin toward a gel with hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
CeraVe Oil Control Moisturizing Gel-Cream No deal yet. We have not found this one at 50% off, so this link goes straight to the product at full price. An oil-free, non-comedogenic gel-cream with niacinamide.
Finish with sunscreen every morning. Look for SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum, non-comedogenic, and no added fragrance or oils. Gel and fluid textures sit best on oily skin.
Lightweight broad-spectrum SPF 50, also a base for makeup. Clip the on-page coupon for the price above.
Use a clay mask once a week. Kaolin and bentonite clay pull excess oil from the surface and help with the look of pores.

$18.95$37.9950% off

A lightweight concealer with a natural finish, in a range of shades.
The goal is to add water back to the skin and seal it in. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends short warm showers, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and moisturizer applied while the skin is still damp. Dry skin does best with humectants that pull in water, like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, under richer ingredients that hold it in, like ceramides and shea butter.
Cleanse gently, or just rinse with water in the morning. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser or a nourishing cleansing bar. Skip anything that foams hard or leaves the skin squeaky.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
$24.50$49.9951% off
Half or Nothing may earn commissions on qualifying purchases.
A non-foaming, fragrance-free cleanser, in a large 16 fl oz size.
A mild cleansing bar, gentler than soap, in a 24-pack.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 No deal yet. We have not found this one at 50% off, so this link goes straight to the product at full price. A low-cost hyaluronic acid serum with vitamin B5 and ceramides.
Seal it in with a cream, not a lotion. The American Academy of Dermatology says creams and ointments work better than lotions for dry skin. Look for ceramides, glycerin, petrolatum, or shea butter on the label.

What to skip when the skin is very dry: products with alcohol or fragrance, and retinol on the nights your skin feels raw. Add those back once the barrier feels normal again. For makeup, choose hydrating or dewy formulas over matte ones.
Normal skin is balanced, not tight and not shiny, with few breakouts. The routine is short: a gentle cleanser, a light moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day. Add a treatment like vitamin C or a retinol only if you have a specific goal.
Sensitive skin is about how easily your skin reacts, not how much oil it makes, so it can overlap oily, dry, or combination. It stings, flushes, or breaks out from fragrance, dyes, alcohol, and strong actives. Keep it minimal: a fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer, a mineral sunscreen, and one new product at a time with a few days between each. If redness or stinging is constant, see a dermatologist so rosacea or eczema can be ruled out.
Wear sunscreen every day. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher for everyone, regardless of skin type or tone. Oily skin does well with gel and fluid textures. Dry skin can use a moisturizing or cream SPF. The Clevariel SPF 50 above suits both.
Do not over-exfoliate. More is not better. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that exfoliation is not right for every skin type, and that dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin may only tolerate a soft washcloth with a mild chemical exfoliant. Signs you have pushed too hard: redness, stinging when you apply products, new tightness or flaking, and breakouts that were not there before. If that happens, stop all acids and retinol and go back to a gentle cleanser and moisturizer for a week or two.
Patch test and give it time. Try a new active on the inside of your forearm for a few days first. Most skincare changes take four to twelve weeks to show, so change one thing at a time.

Wash with a gentle cleanser, wait 30 minutes, and put nothing else on. Tight or flaky leans dry. Shiny across the forehead, nose, and chin leans oily. A blotting sheet is a second check: heavy with oil means oily, nearly clean plus tightness means dry.
Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology says it is still important to moisturize oily skin, just with a lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic formula. Skipping moisturizer can leave the skin dehydrated, which can make it produce even more oil.
Yes, that is combination skin, and it is the most common type. The T-zone runs oily while the cheeks run normal to dry. Use lighter, oil-free products where you are shiny and richer, more hydrating products where you are tight.
Once a week for a clay mask is enough for most oily skin. For a leave-on exfoliant, start with two or three times a week and see how your skin responds. Dry and sensitive skin should exfoliate less, or use only a soft washcloth with a mild chemical exfoliant.
